Apple could be planning its most futuristic iPhone for 2028

Apple’s plans for its 2028 iPhone are already generating excitement, with early reports suggesting the company is preparing a more refined version of the major redesign expected for its 20th anniversary model in 2027.

While the device is still more than two years away, rumours indicate Apple is focusing on fixing the shortcomings of the anniversary iPhone rather than introducing another dramatic overhaul.

One of the biggest expected upgrades is a more polished curved glass display that wraps around all four edges of the phone. Reports claim Apple could replace the display material used in the 2027 model with a more advanced indium zinc oxide layer, helping reduce image distortion, improve brightness and keep the curved edges cooler during use.

The company is also believed to be pushing closer to its long-standing goal of a truly uninterrupted display. If under-display Face ID technology is not ready for the 2027 model, the 2028 iPhone could become the first to hide both the Face ID system and front camera beneath the screen, removing the need for a visible cutout or further shrinking the Dynamic Island.

The slimmer display technology may also allow Apple to reduce the bezels even further, giving the phone an almost edge-to-edge appearance.

Another rumoured addition is tandem OLED display technology, which already powers Apple’s latest iPad Pro. The dual-layer panel is expected to deliver higher brightness, longer display life and better battery efficiency than current iPhone screens.

Performance could also receive a major boost. Reports suggest Apple’s top-end 2028 models may feature an “A22 Pro” chip built on an advanced 1.4-nanometre process. The new processor is expected to offer faster performance while using significantly less power.

Photography enthusiasts may also have something to look forward to. Apple is reportedly testing a 200 megapixel periscope telephoto camera, a significant jump from current iPhone hardware. The higher resolution could capture finer detail and allow users to crop images more aggressively without sacrificing quality.

For now, these features remain unconfirmed, and Apple’s plans could change before the phone reaches production. Even so, the rumours offer an early glimpse of where the iPhone lineup may be heading as Apple continues its long-term redesign strategy.
