YouTube has globally introduced a new four-digit profile lock feature to protect the privacy of users who share televisions and other devices.

Following the major update, other members of a household will no longer be able to access a user’s private profile, watch history or personalised video recommendations.

At a time when digital privacy has become increasingly important, YouTube, the world’s largest video-sharing platform, has addressed a long-standing issue faced by users who share devices with family members.

YouTube CEO Neal Mohan has confirmed that the new account-locking feature is being gradually rolled out to users worldwide.

The feature will help protect users’ private data on shared devices, particularly smart TVs. The aim is to prevent other household members from viewing a user’s private subscriptions and to ensure that their activity does not unnecessarily affect YouTube’s personalised video recommendations.

How to activate profile lock

Users can easily activate the new feature by opening the YouTube app on their TV, going to the navigation bar on the left and selecting Settings.

However, YouTube has clarified that the lock will be set separately for each device. This means that if the same YouTube account is being used on two different TVs or devices in a household, separate codes will have to be configured on each device to maintain privacy.

Unlock the TV profile using a mobile phone

The new feature has also been designed to make the unlocking process more convenient.

Users will not necessarily have to enter the four-digit code using the TV remote every time. After selecting a locked profile, they can unlock their TV profile through the

YouTube app on their mobile phone.

For this option to work, notifications must be enabled in the YouTube mobile app.

Alternative option if the password is forgotten

YouTube has also provided an alternative solution for users who forget their four-digit code. If a user forgets the code, they can select the “Forgot password” option displayed on the TV screen and use basic information associated with their Google account to unlock and reset the profile.

YouTube has clarified, however, that the four-digit code should not be considered a conventional high-security password. Its primary purpose is to provide household-level privacy on shared devices.

Smart TVs have increasingly become shared family devices, with different household members using the same YouTube account to watch content based on their individual interests.

One of the major problems with this arrangement has been that one person’s viewing history could influence the recommendations shown on another person’s home screen, resulting in irrelevant videos.

In addition, personal video preferences appearing in front of other family members could create privacy concerns. YouTube’s new profile lock is aimed at establishing clearer personal digital boundaries on shared devices.

From a technology perspective, the feature provides a balance between shared hardware and individual digital experiences.
Providing individual privacy on shared platforms such as smart TVs has long been a challenge for technology companies.

The update could also help ensure that YouTube’s recommendation system is less affected by the viewing habits of different users. Each user will be able to maintain a more personalised experience based on their own history and preferences.

The option to unlock the TV through a mobile phone instead of the remote also highlights Google’s efforts to create a more integrated and user-friendly digital ecosystem.

Although the feature may appear relatively small, it could potentially influence how other smart TV applications approach privacy and profile management on shared devices.
