Popular graphic design platform Canva has suggested holding a nationwide design competition to help create a new look for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The company said that it is ready to organise and fund the contest as the airline is starting a new chapter under new ownership.
The idea was shared on LinkedIn by Ahmed Iqbal, Canva’s General Manager for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
He said in his post that Canva wants to speak with PIA’s management about the proposal. According to him, the competition would allow people from across Pakistan to take part in creating the airline’s new identity.
What the redesign would include
Participants would be asked to create a new logo in the contest. Additionally, the participants will work on brand guidelines, aircraft paint design and a marketing campaign for the airline’s relaunch.
Iqbal said that the goal is to help rebuild public trust in PIA. He also said Canva is ready to offer big cash prizes to the winners.
Using the words “Designed by Pakistanis, for Pakistan,” he said the project could give people a chance to shape the future of the country’s national airline.
Iqbal also shared two images of PIA aircraft with colourful Ajrak-inspired designs. He said that the artwork was made by someone who is not a professional designer using Canva and Affinity.

Netizens react to Canva PIA contest
Some users liked the idea and said it could encourage young designers while promoting Pakistan’s culture and traditional art.
Others raised practical concerns. They said large amounts of paint could make aircraft heavier and increase fuel costs. Some also noted that darker colours can absorb more heat, which may increase cooling needs.
Many users pointed out that most airlines use white aircraft because they are easier to maintain and can help reduce long term operating costs.
