Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir said the armed forces remain committed to defeating terrorism. He also stressed the need for lasting peace and stability across Pakistan. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), Field Marshal Munir made the remarks during a visit to Peshawar Corps Headquarters on Tuesday. The Peshawar Corps commander received him during the visit. The visit focused on the security situation in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Munir received a briefing on several security-related matters. These included counterterrorism operations, border management and operational preparedness.
ISPR said Munir praised the morale and readiness of security personnel. He also appreciated their professionalism and commitment to protecting the country and its people. ISPR said Munir directed troops to remain vigilant. He also instructed them to maintain the highest standards of operational preparedness. The military’s media wing quoted Munir as saying the armed forces would continue their efforts against terrorism. He also linked those efforts with lasting peace and stability across the country.
During his visit, Munir also went to Yadgar-e-Shuhada. He laid a floral wreath there and offered Fateha. He paid tribute to soldiers who lost their lives in the fight against terrorism. Munir said their sacrifices would not be forgotten. The visit took place after a recent attack in Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The attack occurred at the old Police Lines and killed 23 people. Around 100 others were injured, according to the report. Security forces later launched an overnight clearance operation in the area. Eight terrorists were killed during the operation.
The security situation also remained linked to developments along the Afghanistan border. Pakistan’s information ministry said the armed forces conducted airstrikes against terrorist sites in the border region. The ministry said the strikes killed more than 28 terrorists. It described the strikes as calibrated action against hideouts and safe havens of terrorist organisations. Security forces also carried out an intelligence-based ground operation in Kohat and Hangu districts. The operation targeted a group of terrorists, according to the ministry.
The operations were conducted under the counterterrorism campaign Ghazab lil Haq. The campaign was launched in February after firing from across the border by the Afghan Taliban, according to the report. Pakistan has faced renewed terrorist activity since the Afghan Taliban returned to power in Kabul in 2021. Islamabad has repeatedly called on the Taliban administration to address terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan.
Pakistani officials have particularly raised concerns about groups linked to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan. They say such groups have been involved in attacks inside Pakistan. The latest statement from Field Marshal Munir highlights the armed forces’ continued focus on counterterrorism operations. It also comes amid heightened security activity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and along the Afghanistan border.
