The federal government has increased the diyat amount for murder cases to Rs 19.35 million for the financial year 2026-27 across Pakistan.
The increase in the amount is nearly 97% more than the previous year.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, the amount has been calculated on the value of 30,630 grams of silver, in accordance with Section 323 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) 1860.
Diyat refers to financial compensation paid by a person convicted of murder to the legal heirs of the deceased, subject to the applicable legal provisions.
For the financial year 2025-26, the diyat amount was set at Rs 9.83 million. The latest increase is largely linked to a significant rise in the price of silver.
The diyat amount has increased steadily in recent years. It was fixed at Rs 6.76 million in 2023-24, compared with Rs 4.32 million in 2022-23.
The new amount will apply during the financial year 2026-27.

KP govt introduces new number plates for vehicles
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government has introduced new number plates for government and private vehicles.
The KP government has decided to replace the number plates of all vehicles across the province with new RFID-enabled plates.
According to the Excise Department, the new plates will feature radio-frequency identification (RFID) stickers, allowing authorities to identify and track vehicles more efficiently.
Officials said the existing number plates are issued for Rs1,200, while the new RFID-enabled plates will cost Rs4,000.
The technology is expected to improve vehicle records, help identify stolen or suspicious vehicles and strengthen traffic management.
The new plates will be introduced for government and private vehicles in phases. Further details about the rollout are expected to be announced by the authorities.
Separately, the district administration in Upper Swat has announced a comprehensive survey of boats following an increase in boat accidents in the popular tourist area.
Officials said the survey would assess the fitness, safety arrangements and overall condition of boats operating at different locations.
Authorities will also determine whether the boats meet prescribed safety standards and identify those that may pose risks to tourists.
