Punjab has started issuing permits to the youth aged 16 to 18 years to drive motor vehicles with the fees set at Rs500 per permit.
The new policy has permitted young applicants to legally ride vehicles under certain conditions on road while ensuring safety regulations are obeyed.
Applicants are required to pass a road test and a sign test in order to receive the permit. In addition, permission from a father or legal guardian is mandatory.
A stamped consent form is required with Form B to be submitted as part of the application process.
These requirements are intended to ensure that parents are involved in supervision and sufficient training is given before young drivers are permitted on the road.
Under the revised rules, permit holders cannot be allowed to ride motorcycles that are more than 125cc. Electric bikes will also have defined limits to avoid abuse.
Authorities have been clear that the permit shall automatically be cancelled when the permit holder reaches the age of 18.
After reaching adulthood, individuals will then be required to pass driving licence test in order to continue driving legally.
In a separate development, the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has launched a digital facility to speed up and make the procedure for obtaining a driving licence more convenient for the citizens.
The issuing process for learner licences for LTV and HTV transport vehicles has been fully digitised.
The system enables applicants to fill their applications online from home. It has been developed by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Information Technology Board with administrative support of the Transport Director and the Transport and Mass Transit Department.
The service is available on the Dastak mobile application.
The citizens can download the app and enter their details and make the necessary payment online. After digital verification, the learner licence is issued in a short amount of time.
Officials said more services would in future be moved to the internet to promote e-governance and to reduce delays.
The initiative would aim to eliminate long queues and make legal procedures easier for the public.
