Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to create a full-length artificial intelligence (AI)-generated adaptation of The Odyssey, claiming it will be a “historically accurate” version of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.
The Tesla and xAI founder shared the announcement on his social media platform X after reposting a three-minute AI-generated clip of The Odyssey created by another user.
According to Musk, his AI model, Grok Imagine, will produce a complete feature-length version of The Odyssey before the end of 2026.
“Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer,” Musk wrote while sharing the clip.
The announcement came as Musk criticised filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, particularly the reported casting of actress Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy.
Musk alleged that Nolan’s casting decision was aimed at winning awards, claiming the director chose Nyong’o because “he wants the awards.”
The billionaire also suggested that the AI-generated short film he shared, which featured an all-white cast, better reflected his vision of a historically accurate adaptation of Homer’s classic work.
Musk’s comments have sparked fresh debate online over the use of AI in filmmaking, as well as discussions surrounding historical representation and casting choices in adaptations of ancient literature.
The Odyssey is a masterpiece of filmmaking, and one of the reasons why Christopher Nolan continues to be one of the most ambitious filmmakers in existence.
It goes without saying that it wasn’t easy to adapt one of the oldest and most influential stories in human history.
Homer’s epic tale has been retold countless times over the years, but Nolan takes this classic story and makes it his own, while still keeping the essence of the original story.
Instead of retelling the old story, he creates an experience based on spectacle, emotion and philosophical depth and produces a film among the best in his incredible filmography.
The first thing that comes to mind is the scope of the production. Each shot is carefully crafted, with amazing practical effects, gorgeous cinematography and a never-wavering dedication to realism.
Once again, Nolan has shown that there are many scenes in cinema that he can pull off that other film-makers cannot.
Each scene, be it a stormy sea or a mythical creature or a close discussion, seems to have a clear purpose and engages the viewer.
