The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is preparing to launch a large-scale crackdown on non-filers who publicly showcase lavish lifestyles on social media while not paying taxes in line with their apparent wealth.
According to sources, the operation is expected to begin on October 1 in the upcoming fiscal year, targeting individuals who display luxury assets and extravagant spending online without submitting income tax returns.
The FBR will reportedly monitor social media activity from July 1 to September 30, reviewing posts and lifestyles of individuals showing signs of significant wealth. A dedicated team will analyse data to identify potential tax evaders.
Sources said the tax authority is compiling lists of people who flaunt luxury lifestyles online but have not filed tax returns. Such individuals are likely to receive notices from the FBR and may face further legal action.
The crackdown will focus on non-filers sharing content featuring expensive cars, luxury motorcycles, yachts, high-end properties, farmhouses, designer clothing, jewelry and luxury watches.
Authorities will also scrutinise individuals posting about extravagant spending at weddings, musical events, qawwali gatherings and other celebrations where large amounts of cash are visibly displayed.
Sources further revealed that the FBR has already gathered extensive data on wealthy individuals showcasing their lifestyles on social media, with support from the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).
The collected information reportedly includes spending patterns, credit and ATM card usage and foreign travel records of individuals suspected of underreporting income while maintaining a luxury lifestyle online.
Formal action against non-filers is expected to begin from October 1, after the completion of the tax return filing period.
Sources added that individuals frequently posting from luxury hotels and fine-dining restaurants may also come under scrutiny if they fail to file tax returns.
The deadline for filing income tax returns is September 30 and no extension is expected, according to sources.
