FBR to monitor bank accounts

Recently, the government decided to closely monitor the financial activities of bank account holders whose total cash deposits or withdrawals exceed Rs100 million in any six month period. According to reports, the new system will take effect from July 1.

Under the new system, banks and the FBR will automatically compare banking and tax records through a digital system.

According to the Finance Act 2026, the purpose is to identify people and businesses that underreport their income, show false expenses, or hide tax related information.

To support this, a new Section 165AB has also been added to the Income Tax Ordinance 2001.

Under this law, banks and electronic money institutions have to upload details of certain financial transactions to a central data system.
