FIFA introduces cutting-edge offside technology for historic 2026 World Cup

FIFA unveils high-tech future of Football for 2026 World Cup

The world’s biggest sporting event is set to become a showcase for cutting-edge innovation, as the FIFA World Cup 2026 will introduce Semi-Automated Offside Technology, marking a major leap forward in football officiating and the use of advanced technology in sports.

During this year’s World Cup matches, a special sensor-equipped football called the Kick-Off Smart Ball will be used. The high-speed sensor embedded in the ball will transmit data at 500 Hz. This sensor will work in conjunction with the ball-tracking system and stadium cameras.

The technology is expected to bring near-perfect accuracy to controversial offside and handball decisions. It will automatically send offside alerts to video assistant referees (VAR) through a signalling system.

For the first time, the tournament will also introduce 3D Animated Player Avatar Technology. Special cameras will monitor 29 different points on each player’s body 50 times per second.

Using live 3D models of players, offside lines will be tracked automatically. This will enable referees to receive highly accurate decisions through the semi-automated system within seconds.

According to reports, this advanced technology will reduce decision-making time during matches by up to 50 per cent.

It is worth noting that the smart ball sensor technology was further upgraded after the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. According to FIFA officials, these innovations aim to make football matches faster, fairer, and more transparent.
