A private supermarket in Lahore named ‘Greenvalley’ was found selling non-halal candy.
A social media post has raised concerns among consumers in Pakistan after claiming that an imported candy sold at the hypermarket in Lahore may not comply with halal requirements.
The post alleges that Alpenliebe 2Chew Strawberry Candy, reportedly imported from Vietnam and available at Green Valley Lahore, does not carry a halal certification logo on its packaging despite listing gelatin as one of its ingredients.
According to the post, the source of the gelatin is not specified, making it difficult for consumers to determine whether the product complies with Islamic dietary requirements. Gelatin can be derived from several animal sources, including cattle, fish and pigs, and without clear labelling, consumers are unable to verify its origin.
Gelatin is a colourless, flavourless protein commonly used in confectionery, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products. In countries with large Muslim populations, manufacturers often use halal-certified gelatin or clearly indicate halal certification on product packaging.
The claims have prompted calls on social media for the Punjab Food Authority and other relevant regulators to examine whether the product meets Pakistan’s food labelling and halal standards.
Some consumers have urged authorities to ensure imported food products carry clear ingredient information and, where applicable, recognised halal certification.
Several users have also called for stricter oversight of imported food items, arguing that products containing unspecified gelatin sources should not be allowed on the market until their compliance with local regulations is verified.
The authenticity of the claims circulating on social media has not been independently verified, and there has been no official statement from Green Valley, the manufacturer or the Punjab Food Authority regarding the product at the time of publication.
