Questions have been raised over the dismissal of a Pakistan Television (PTV) employee, Muhammad Basit, who claims he was abruptly terminated and replaced by the daughter of senior journalist Hamid Mir.

According to Basit, he was working at PTV when he was suddenly informed that his employment had been terminated. He alleges that Hamid Mir’s daughter was hired in his place, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his dismissal and the criteria used for the appointment.

The allegations have sparked debate over merit, fairness and accountability in the media industry. Questions have also been raised about whether Basit was dismissed due to unsatisfactory performance or whether other considerations influenced the decision.

Hamid Mir, who has frequently spoken publicly about justice, accountability and professional principles, may face questions over the allegations involving his family. Critics argue that journalists who advocate transparency and fairness should also be willing to address questions concerning matters in which their families are alleged to have an interest.

A transparent inquiry into Basit’s dismissal and the subsequent hiring decision could help establish whether the process followed merit-based criteria or other considerations.
