Former chief selector Mohammad Wasim has levelled a serious allegation of a “fake injury” against opener Imam-ul-Haq during the Lord’s Test. He says that the “drama” of leaving the field over a minor strain has happened before as well, which has drawn strong criticism in cricket circles.
According to a media report, a new controversy arose during the Lord’s Test when national opener Imam-ul-Haq complained of pain in his calf.
Considering the sensitivity of the situation, when the PCB had the player scanned, the medical report revealed only a minor strain.
Commenting on the matter, former chief selector Mohammad Wasim said in clear terms that this is not a new incident, but that this kind of drama has been staged in the past as well.
Imam came under severe criticism from cricket circles and commentators when he entered the field hesitantly and handed the strike over to debutant young player Azaan Awais.
Experts believe that he allegedly used the injury as an excuse to escape from his basic responsibilities. The surprising thing is that despite having immense experience, he also avoided facing the first ball in important series against Bangladesh, West Indies and England, and every time during difficult situations, he pushed young Azaan Awais forward.
Worst record and fielding shortcomings
If we look at the statistics of his recent performances, the situation appears even more disappointing. In the second innings of the last 8 Test matches, the opener’s record has been extremely poor.
He has entered double figures only twice in these innings and has scored a total of 45 runs at an extremely low average of 5.5. Along with failure in batting, he also dropped important catches in the slips during fielding, which further damaged the team’s position.
Cricket history is full of countless brave players who, despite broken fingers and fractured bones, batted and set everlasting examples of bravery.
Those great players gave everything for their teams despite the pain, but in contrast, Imam-ul-Haq kept hesitating to come out to bat on the basis of a minor strain.
This attitude becomes even more prominent when we look at his recent Test record and the catches dropped in the slips, which indicate a decline in his confidence.

In modern cricket, where players’ mental and physical fitness holds key importance, leaving the field by using a minor strain as justification casts doubt on his commitment to the game.
The statements of the former chief selector also make it clear that such unprofessional behaviour is no longer being ignored by the management and in the dressing room.
If this behaviour does not change, this situation could prove to be a serious warning sign for the opener’s career in the future.
