Omoda & Jaecoo has issued a safety recall in Australia for more than 1,000 Jaecoo J7 vehicles after identifying a manufacturing fault that could cause the engine to shut down while driving.
The recall affects 1,028 units of the 2025 Jaecoo J7 and applies only to the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol variant sold in the Australian market.
The official notice filed by the Australian Department of Infrastructure states:
“Due to a manufacturing defect, the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) wiring harness may chafe against the engine mounting bracket and become damaged.”
What is the problem?
The recall notice says the ECU wiring harness may rub against the engine mounting bracket over time. This contact can damage the wiring and disrupt communication between key vehicle systems.
If the wiring becomes compromised, it could lead to a sudden loss of power or an unexpected engine shutdown. The company warned that such a failure while the vehicle is in motion could increase the risk of an accident, potentially causing injury to occupants or other road users.
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted directly and asked to bring their cars to authorised dealerships for a free inspection and repair.
Brand expansion in Pakistan
The recall comes as Omoda and Jaecoo launched the car in Pakistan in October 2025, where the brand operates under Nishat Group’s Next Gen Auto.
The company entered Pakistan in August last year with two electric models, the Omoda E5 and the Jaecoo J6. In October, it launched the locally assembled Jaecoo J7 plug-in hybrid, priced at around Rs10 million, marking its first hybrid offering in the country.
Jaecoo J5: cheapest SUV
As compared to the defects in the Jaecoo J7, the Jaecoo J5 is a smaller, mini SUV and offers a self-charging hybrid. It is the most affordable and cheapest new hybrid vehicle available in Pakistan. The SUV ranges between Rs6,699,000 and Rs7,699,000. The hybrid system features a combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1.8kWh battery that recharges during driving.
In other markets, the J5 is available in electric, petrol, and hybrid versions. Reviews from Australia and South Africa highlight its focus on fuel efficiency and modern styling.
