The Pakistan Academy of Engineering (PAE) has now proposed that an underground railway network be built in Karachi to tackle transport problems across the city.
During the PAE’s 40th Symposium, ‘Importance of Underground Mobility in a Megacity, the proposal was officially presented.
The event was attended by engineering and transport experts of not only Pakistan but also China and the United States (US).
Fully operational underground railway networks across the world in places like New York, Washington DC, Delhi, Dhaka and Singapore were reviewed.
Development of two underground railway systems in Karachi was then proposed after careful review.
This network is expected to include routes from Numaish Chowrangi to Merewether Tower.
Another route would travel from FTC to Shahrah-e-Faisal to I.I Chundrigar Road and Tower.
While discussing Karachi’s transport problems, PAE President Prof. Dr. Brig. (retd) Nasim Akhtar Khan said that the city is in desperate need for infrastructure that can work long-term.
The authority added that the new underground railway network would work alongside the Red Line BRT system. It is also expected to solve Karachi’s traffic problems.
Karachi to soon use AI traffic monitoring system
Earlier, it was announced that Karachi Traffic Police will extend its artificial intelligence (AI) based traffic monitoring system to more roads by August 2026.
The new areas will include Airport Road, Clifton, and the Do Talwar and Teen Talwar junctions of the city.
DIG Traffic Pir Muhammad Shah said that the system is currently being tested on Shahrah-e-Faisal. It is one of the busiest roads in Karachi.
Twenty high quality Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras have been installed there. These cameras watch traffic violations 24/7 to Drigh Road.
