Low-level flooding is continuing in the Indus River at Kalabagh, Taunsa and Guddu, and in the Ravi River at Balloki and Sadhanai, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).
The PMD has warned that the Indus River at Guddu is likely to reach a moderate flood level within the next 24 hours. Sukkur could also face moderate flooding over the next 48 hours if the current rise in water levels continues.
Meanwhile, the latest figures released by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) show that 109 people have lost their lives and 360 others have been injured since the monsoon season began on June 25.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has recorded the highest number of fatalities, with 55 deaths, followed by Punjab with 36, Balochistan with 8, Azad Jammu and Kashmir with 7, Sindh with 2, and Gilgit-Baltistan with 1.
During a briefing to federal ministers, the NDMA said that more rainfall is expected across eastern Punjab and northern Pakistan during the first ten days of August, with the monsoon likely to continue having its greatest impact on the country’s northern regions.
The briefing was attended by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, Climate Change Minister Musadik Malik, Water Resources Minister Mian Muhammad Moin Wattoo, Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal, and other federal ministers.
NDMA officials also noted that southern and central Balochistan have so far received little rainfall, while Sindh has not been affected by any major weather system. As a result, weather conditions have varied significantly across different parts of the country.
