Major Relief for Electricity Consumers

The Power Division has taken steps to provide relief to electricity consumers by reducing the expected fuel price adjustment (FPA) for September to Rs2.56 per unit from nearly Rs6 per unit.

According to a statement issued by the Power Division, the move is expected to save consumers from an additional burden of Rs3.44 per unit.

The statement said authorities carried out limited load management for two to two-and-a-half hours a day in September to reduce the impact of expensive alternative fuels on electricity generation.

The Power Division said the September fuel price adjustment could have reached Rs6 per unit. However, targeted load management and efforts to reduce the impact of imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) prices helped keep the expected adjustment at Rs2.56 per unit.

The division also warned that domestic gas demand usually rises during winter, which could further limit gas supplies. It said the power sector would continue to need regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) to maintain the stability of the electricity system.
