The political tensions of India intensified after opposition leaders joined ongoing student led demonstrations demanding education reforms and the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
The protests gained more attention when senior leaders of the Congress party staged outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi residence in New Delhi, and Activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest with a hunger strike before being removed by police and taken to hospital.
The opposition said the protest was aimed at condemning the police response. Police during the protests used batons and tear gas to disperse crowds, leaving dozens of protesters and police personnel injured. Videos shared by Congress showed party leader Rahul Gandhi and other members being detained and taken away in buses before being released later.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi demanded the resignations of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Gandhi said students deserved an apology for the police action and claimed the opposition protested outside the Prime Minister’s residence after being prevented from raising the issue in Parliament.
On the other hand, earlier this week, Delhi police arrested India’s opposition leader Rahul Gandi, and his sister Priyanka Gandhi joined Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest outside Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi.
The opposition leader and chief of India’s largest opposition party, the Indian National Congress, Rahul Gandhi, demanded the resignation of India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the brutal violence on innocent students at Jantar Mantar.
Rahul Gandhi wrote in a social media post that Modi must resign for “destroying the future of India’s youth.”
Rahul Gandhi further wrote on X, “We have marched to PM Modi’s house to demand answers from him for the brutalities against young students yesterday.
