Pakistan defeated Hong Kong 2-1 in the men’s team squash semi-final at the Asian Games on Thursday. The victory secured Pakistan a place in the final and guaranteed at least a silver medal. The semi-final took place at the Nagoya Kinjo Futo Arena in Japan. Pakistan will now compete for the gold medal in the final. The team will face the winner of the India-Malaysia semi-final. The result also marked another important step for Pakistan’s squash team. The team had already defeated South Korea 2-0 in the quarter-final. That win secured Pakistan a team squash medal at the Games.
Noor Zaman starts the semi-final
Pakistan’s top-ranked player Noor Zaman played the opening match. He faced Hong Kong’s experienced player Tsz Kwan Lau. Noor won the first game 12-10 after a close contest. Both players traded points throughout the game. Lau responded strongly in the second game. He built a 10-3 lead and won the game 11-3. The Hong Kong player continued his strong form in the third game. Lau won 11-6 and moved Hong Kong ahead in the match. Noor tried to fight back in the fourth game. However, Lau maintained control and won 11-5. Lau completed a 3-1 victory over Noor. His win gave Hong Kong a 1-0 lead in the team tie.
Ashab Irfan levels the tie
Mohammad Ashab Irfan then took the court for Pakistan. He faced world No. 57 Chi Hin Henry Leung. Ashab won the opening game 11-5. He then produced a strong comeback in the second game. Leung quickly moved 6-0 ahead. Ashab responded with a series of points and reduced the gap. The score eventually reached 10-10. Ashab saved four game points before taking his own opportunity. He won the game 13-11 after a 14-minute battle. That gave Pakistan a 2-0 lead in games. Ashab remained composed in the third game. He won 11-7 after saving two match points. His 3-0 victory levelled the overall team tie at 1-1.
Nasir Iqbal seals Pakistan’s final spot
The deciding match featured Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal against Cheuk Nam Lai. Lai won the first game 12-10 after a tight contest. Nasir then responded by taking the second game 11-3. Nasir continued his momentum in the third game. He won 11-9 and moved Pakistan closer to victory. The fourth game produced another close contest. Nasir initially led 7-2, but Lai fought back. The score reached 10-10 before both players exchanged game points. Nasir eventually won 14-12. His victory gave Pakistan a 2-1 win over Hong Kong. It also secured the team’s place in the Asian Games squash final.
Pakistan guaranteed a silver medal
Pakistan’s victory means the team has secured at least a silver medal. The final will determine whether the team wins gold. The current squad includes Noor Zaman, Ashab Irfan, Nasir Iqbal and Asim Khan. The same core group won silver at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games. Pakistan last won the Asian Games squash team title in 2010. The team defeated Malaysia 2-0 in the final in Guangzhou. The team now has an opportunity to compete for another Asian Games gold medal.
