Thatta Cement makes surprise entry in Pakistan’s booming EV market

Tahir • November 5, 2026 • Technology

Thatta Cement, a Pakistani cement manufacturer, has announced plans to enter the country’s growing electric vehicle (EV) market, marking a new expansion beyond its traditional cement business.

The company plans to introduce electric vehicles in Pakistan through a wholly owned subsidiary, initially importing completely built-up (CBU) electric cars from China.

The development was disclosed in a notice submitted to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Thursday, November 5, 2026. According to the notice, the company’s Board of Directors has approved an investment in a wholly owned subsidiary to venture into the electric vehicle business.

Thatta Cement, which is engaged in cement manufacturing and marketing and also owns Thatta Power (Private) Limited, said Pakistan’s EV market was witnessing rapid growth amid increasing consumer interest, the arrival of international and domestic brands, and government incentives and tax concessions.

Thatta Cement targets affordable electric cars

Unlike companies focusing on premium electric vehicles, Thatta Cement intends to target Pakistan’s largely underserved mass-market segment.

The company plans to introduce affordable, compact and small electric vehicles designed to meet the transportation needs and purchasing power of a wider section of the population.

According to the company, its strategy is aimed at tapping into the growing demand for economical electric mobility rather than competing in the conventional niche or premium EV segment.

The move is also expected to help the company establish an early presence in Pakistan’s evolving electric vehicle industry.

Chinese electric cars to arrive initially

In the first phase, the newly established subsidiary will import completely built-up electric vehicles from China. These vehicles will arrive in Pakistan in fully assembled form rather than being manufactured or assembled locally.

However, Thatta Cement has indicated that its business operations could expand beyond imports in the future.

The company said it may explore local vehicle assembly and other related activities as part of its longer-term strategy to develop a sustainable business platform.

It has not yet disclosed the investment amount allocated to the new venture or announced a timeline for launching its electric vehicles in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s EV market attracts new players

Pakistan’s electric vehicle industry has been gaining momentum amid rising fuel prices, growing environmental awareness and government efforts to promote electric mobility.

The introduction of tax concessions and other incentives has also encouraged businesses to explore opportunities in the sector.

However, the market continues to face challenges, including limited charging infrastructure, affordability concerns, financing constraints and the need to develop a stronger local supply chain.

Thatta Cement’s planned entry adds another potential player to Pakistan’s developing EV industry, with its initial focus on affordable electric cars aimed at attracting a wider consumer base.
