Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri Moghadam said on Sunday that Pakistan continues to play a central role as a mediator in ongoing talks between Iran and the United States.
“Pakistan remains a mediator, and we have not made any decision to change this,” he said in an interview with an Iranian news agency. He added that progress in the talks depends on a change in Washington’s approach.
His statement came a day after Donald Trump expressed doubts about a new Iranian peace proposal.
Iranian news agencies Tasnim and Fars reported that Tehran sent a 14-point proposal to Pakistan on Saturday. The plan includes ending the conflict on all fronts and introducing a new framework for the Strait of Hormuz.
Ambassador Moghadam confirmed that Iran has shared the proposal with the United States through Pakistan. He described Pakistan’s role in the process as “valuable” and key to ongoing diplomatic efforts.
He said Iran has clearly presented its position and demands, adding that meaningful progress will only happen if the United States changes its behaviour.
He also stressed that Iran will not compromise on its national interests or defence.
Talks between Iran and the United States have remained stalled since the April 8 ceasefire. A round of negotiations held in Islamabad failed to produce a breakthrough.
Pakistan helped broker the ceasefire after a six-week conflict that began on February 28, when US and Israeli forces carried out joint attacks on Iran.
