Northern parts of Pakistan experience summer snowfall

The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a high level heatwave alert for many parts of Pakistan from May 19 to May 26.

According to the advisory, several areas in Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan are expected to face very high temperatures for three to five days.

Temperatures in the southern parts of the country have remained much higher than normal during April and May. In some areas, temperatures crossed 44 to 46 degrees Celsius.

NDMA has said that humidity in lower Sindh and dry weather conditions in Punjab and Balochistan could make the heat more dangerous.

At the same time, the Pakistan Meteorological Department issued a glacial lake outburst flood alert for northern areas.

The weather department has also said that a westerly weather system entered the upper parts of the country and affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan. Rain, thunderstorms, and heavy rainfall are also expected in vulnerable mountain areas.

Is it snowing in northern Pakistan?

In recent days, videos of snowfall in northern Pakistan became popular on social media. Many users expressed surprise after seeing snow in May.

Reports say that snowfall and rain continued in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir during March and April.

Snow avalanches near the Karakoram Highway blocked roads and stranded tourists in some areas. Landslides also damaged roads, water channels, electricity lines, and internet services.

Residents of Skardu said snowfall is still taking place on mountain peaks. Some visitors to Deosai Plains also reported fresh snowfall in recent days.

Officials in Mansehra said the area received more snowfall this year during April compared to previous years.

Weather experts say snowfall after March in northern Pakistan is not unusual. However, they added that the intensity of rain and snow has increased in recent years because of climate change.

Climate experts also said Pakistan’s weather patterns are changing. Some northern areas are also now experiencing longer summers along with above normal rainfall.
