Petrol price rise has no impact on bikers

Financial Advisor to the Finance Ministry, Khurram Shehzad, has come under heavy criticism after stating that the impact of rising petroleum product prices is mostly felt by the elite class and car users, while motorcyclists are not significantly affected.

Speaking during an interview with a private television channel, Khurram Shehzad said that the increase in petrol prices mainly affects those who use cars and belong to the upper-income group.

He added that motorcycle users are less impacted because they receive some level of support in terms of affordability.

His remarks, however, triggered strong reactions across social and political circles, with critics calling the statement detached from ground realities and dismissive of the struggles faced by lower and middle-income groups.

Opposition voices and public commentators argued that rising fuel prices affect not only car owners but also motorcyclists, daily wage earners, and ordinary citizens. They said that fuel inflation increases transportation costs, fares, and overall household expenses, directly impacting the common man.

Criticism also poured in on social media. One user, Muhammad Umair, said that government advisers were “adding salt to the wounds” of already struggling citizens.

Another user, Sanaullah Khan, criticised the lifestyle of policymakers, claiming that officials receiving high salaries, official vehicles, fuel allowances, and air travel privileges are disconnected from the hardships faced by the public. He remarked that such individuals would not feel the difference even if petrol prices increased significantly.

Another social media user expressed frustration, saying that policymakers seem unaware of the daily suffering of ordinary citizens.

The controversy has added to ongoing public concerns over inflation and rising fuel costs in Pakistan, with citizens demanding more sensitive and realistic assessments from government representatives regarding the economic burden on the public.
