PHF unveils new selection plan for hockey World Cup

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has prepared a comprehensive selection plan for the national team ahead of the upcoming Hockey World Cup.

Under the proposed criteria, players will be evaluated across five key areas: fitness, technical skills, tactical awareness, mental strength, and attitude.

Foreign coaches will score each player on a scale of one to five. To qualify for selection, players must secure a minimum score of three in at least three of the five evaluation categories.

Player performances will also be monitored using GPS tracking technology and video analysis to ensure an objective assessment.

The proposed selection criteria will be submitted to the PHF Selection Committee and the President of the Pakistan Hockey Federation for final approval.

The PHF has reaffirmed its commitment to implementing a transparent, merit-based, and data-driven selection system for the national team.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation says the proposed selection framework is designed to ensure that places in the national team are earned through measurable performance rather than a player’s reputation or previous accomplishments.

As part of the new system, players will be assessed using modern performance-monitoring tools, including GPS tracking and video analysis. These technologies will allow coaches to evaluate movement, fitness levels, work rate, tactical awareness, and decision-making during training camps and competitive matches, providing data to support objective selection decisions.

Before taking effect, the proposed policy will be presented to the PHF Selection Committee and the federation’s president for final approval.

PHF officials said the initiative reflects the federation’s commitment to a transparent, merit-based, and evidence-driven selection process, expressing hope that the reforms will strengthen the national team’s standards and improve Pakistan’s performance in international hockey.
