Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has formed an 18-member high-level committee to ensure the uninterrupted supply of petroleum products across the country.
The main objective of this initiative is to prevent fuel shortages and avoid abnormal price increases in any emergency situation.
The Finance Minister will head the committee
Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb will head the committee. The Federal Minister for Petroleum and the Minister for Power will also serve as members.
In addition, the Secretary of Finance, the Secretary of Petroleum, the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue and other senior officials have been included to comprehensively review all financial, administrative and technical aspects.
The committee has been directed to conduct a detailed daily review of the country’s available petroleum reserves, import schedule, and overall supply and demand situation.
Sources said complete data on current reserves and expected imports in the coming weeks is being compiled so that an immediate strategy can be implemented in case of any disruption.
Committee will closely monitor global market price trends
The statement further noted that the committee will closely monitor global market price trends and prepare recommendations regarding possible adjustments to domestic petroleum prices.
Experts warn that if key supply routes are affected due to tensions in the Middle East, global oil prices may rise, directly impacting fuel-importing countries, including Pakistan.
The committee has also been tasked with presenting actionable proposals to enable swift decision-making in emergencies, ensuring that the public does not face fuel shortages, long queues, or sudden price hikes.
It is worth noting that a timely and well-coordinated strategy can help stabilise the domestic market and ease inflationary pressures to some extent. Continuous energy supply is essential for sustaining industrial activity and maintaining daily life.
