Under the vision of the Punjab Chief Minister, the provincial government has decided to launch electric bus services in every tehsil across the province, following their introduction at the divisional and district levels.
The tehsil-level electric bus service is scheduled to begin in Punjab in January 2027. A total of 1,500 electric buses will operate across 91 tehsils, while approval has also been granted for dedicated electric bus depots for each tehsil.
The first batch of electric buses for the tehsil-level service will arrive in Lahore in January 2027. The Chief Minister has also approved the provision of additional electric buses to various districts.
The province has set a target of operating 3,000 electric buses across Punjab by June 2027, while the first phase of the electric bus service is targeted for completion by September.
Under the plan, 169 electric buses will be provided for nine tehsils of Multan, 87 for four tehsils of Sahiwal, 63 for Dera Ghazi Khan, and 215 for 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur.
A total of 202 electric buses will operate across 12 tehsils of Faisalabad, while 198 buses will serve 14 tehsils of Sargodha.
Currently, 612 electric buses are fully operational across various districts, benefiting millions of citizens every day. Another 192 electric buses in Multan and other districts are expected to become operational within the next few days.
Additional electric buses will be provided to various districts, including Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore and Muzaffargarh. More buses will also be introduced in Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Attock, Okara, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot and Layyah.
It has also been decided to introduce additional electric buses in Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura.
Meanwhile, work on the Faisalabad and Gujranwala mass transit systems is also progressing rapidly. Projects involving the construction and rehabilitation of 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus Service are also nearing completion.
