In its match with Spain, Portugal was defeated 1-0 in a closely contested last-16 match.
Spain has booked its place in the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
The knockout match was played in Dallas, United States (US).
Spain dominated the match by scoring the first goal, while Portugal relied on counter-attacks and a disciplined defence to stay in the contest.
The decisive moment came in the 90th minute, when Mikel Merino scored the only goal of the match to give Spain a late lead.
Portugal pushed for an equaliser during stoppage time, but Spain’s defence held firm to secure victory and a place in the last eight.
Spain will now face the winner of the round-of-16 match between the US and Belgium in the quarter-finals.
The defeat brought Portugal’s World Cup journey to an end and also ended captain Cristiano Ronaldo’s latest attempt to win football’s biggest prize.
Ronaldo led the attack throughout the match but was unable to create enough clear opportunities against Spain’s organised defence.
