PTCL may have its sights set on a leading digital wallet

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has sparked fresh speculation about a possible expansion into digital financial services after revealing plans to acquire a majority stake in an undisclosed company.

In a notice sent to the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) on Friday, the telecom operator said its Board of Directors had approved the submission of a binding offer for the proposed acquisition.

PTCL said the transaction is still at an early stage and will depend on several conditions, including due diligence, successful negotiations, regulatory approvals and the signing of final agreements.

Although the company did not identify the target, market speculation has centred on a leading digital wallet. If the deal goes ahead, it would mark another major development in Pakistan’s telecom and fintech sectors following PTCL’s acquisition of Telenor Pakistan last year.

Such a move would significantly strengthen PTCL Group’s presence in digital financial services by adding a well established mobile wallet business to its portfolio.

The company, however, has declined to reveal further details, saying the commercial terms have not yet been finalised and no definitive agreement has been signed. PTCL added that it will keep the PSX informed of any material developments as the process moves forward.

Meanwhile, the digital wallet widely linked to the speculation also avoided confirming or denying the reports.

In a statement, the company said it does not comment on market speculation and remains focused on serving its customers.

It also sought to reassure users that their funds remain secure, fully protected and available at all times. The company said all services, including money transfers, bill payments, mobile top ups and wallet withdrawals, continue to operate without disruption.
