Punjab govt considers linking free travel facility to fuel prices

Free transport service

The Punjab government is reviewing a major policy change regarding the future of the free public transport facility currently available to citizens across the province, including Lahore.

According to sources, the government is considering linking the continuation of the free travel scheme to petroleum prices. During a briefing by the provincial transport department, officials informed the Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz that the facility could be withdrawn if petrol prices rise to Rs300 per litre. A final decision on the matter is expected next week.

Authorities are also considering a proposal not to further expand the free travel program across the province. There is growing speculation that the facility could be phased out in the near future, depending on economic conditions and fuel price trends.

The report revealed that more than 70 million passengers have benefited from the free travel initiative across Punjab over the past two months.

The scheme was originally introduced to provide relief to commuters amid rising petroleum prices and was implemented across several public transport services, including the Metro Bus, Orange Line Metro Train, electric buses and the Speedo Bus Service.

Officials said the policy is being reassessed in light of the current economic situation and fluctuations in fuel prices. The final decision will be made following consultations at the highest levels of the provincial government.
