The Punjab government has made the decision to establish a comprehensive parking infrastructure as a long-term solution to the parking issues.
Preparations have begun to implement modern underground and smart parking systems in central Lahore, the Walled City, and other bustling commercial areas.
Sources indicate that the Punjab government is initiating a major project aimed at permanently addressing the escalating traffic congestion, illegal parking, and severe traffic jams in markets throughout the province, including Lahore.
Following the directives of former Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, the process of identifying appropriate sites for parking plazas across Punjab, including Lahore, has been initiated, with discussions underway regarding the potential declaration of the upcoming financial year as the year dedicated to the construction of parking plazas.
The total number of underground parking plazas in Lahore is set to increase to seven, with construction already in progress on two parking plazas managed by TEPA.
New parking plaza to be built at Bhati Gate
A decision has also been made to build a new parking plaza at Bhati Gate, while two additional parking plazas are at various stages of construction within Lahore. Furthermore, directives have been issued for the establishment of parking plazas at two more sites in the Walled City.
The Walled City Authority has been assigned the responsibility of land identification, feasibility studies, and preliminary technical work, while the engineering, design, and construction duties for the projects have been allocated to the LDA.
A detailed plan is being formulated for the development of parking plazas not only in Lahore but also in other historic and heritage cities of Punjab.
Proposals have been requested from the relevant deputy commissioners of cities experiencing parking challenges.
