Punjab launches first cybercrime unit, mandates vehicle e-tagging

The Government of Punjab has given the green light to set up the province’s first cybercrime investigation unit and has also made e-tagging compulsory for all vehicles, including motorcycles.

During a special meeting focused on tackling digital terrorism and tightening cyber surveillance, the Punjab Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, emphasised that monitoring across Punjab would be significantly strengthened in the coming days.

She approved the creation of the province’s first cybercrime investigation unit and announced that e-tagging will now be mandatory for all vehicles

She also instructed the setup of a “micro security iron shield” within seven days and gave approval for the formation of the Punjab Cybercrime Investigation Unit (CCIU), including the appointment of its head.

Furthermore, she directed authorities to block unauthorised movements through non-traditional provincial entry points, install searchlights at key locations, and deploy drone surveillance to enhance security measures.

The CM also ordered the installation of rooftop monitoring systems at check posts and instructed the relevant department to acquire an advanced drone defence system, the press release stated.

She emphasised the need to regulate and restrict unauthorised drone activity and affirmed that combing operations to identify terrorists and criminal elements would continue. CM Maryam further directed enhancements in training and the provision of modern equipment for the Riot Management Police.
