The Punjab School Education Department has asked around 25,000 School Teacher Interns (STIs) to continue teaching in schools, according to a report on Monday.
The decision has come as the official notification to extend their contracts has been delayed.
The department has told all STIs to keep doing their teaching duties.
School Education Secretary Mudassar Riaz Malik said the interns would receive their salaries after the summer break. They will also be paid for the time they continued working during the delay.
Has the contract extension been approved?
The secretary said a summary for extending the STI contracts is still waiting for approval. Once it is approved, the interns will be paid according to the official schedule.
The contracts of around 25,000 STIs across Punjab ended on May 22. Since then, some interns have faced confusion about whether they can continue working.
Some STIs said certain school heads did not allow them to teach because there was no official notification about the contract extension.
STIs seek official notification
The interns have asked the Punjab government to issue the contract extension notification soon. They said this would remove confusion and allow them to continue their work without problems.
Punjab releases non-salary funds
The Punjab School Education Department has released Rs4.8875 billion for schools across all 36 districts of the province.
The money is for non-salary expenses of primary, elementary and higher secondary schools. It will be used during the financial year 2026-27.
The funds are available at the main branches of the National Bank of Pakistan in the districts.
How much money will districts get?
Lahore schools will receive Rs161.784 million. Faisalabad will get Rs225.972 million, while Rawalpindi will receive Rs142.087 million.
Gujranwala has been allocated Rs1.29167 billion. Sialkot will get Rs1.381 billion. Bahawalnagar will receive Rs1.67128 billion, while Bahawalpur has been allocated Rs1.448 billion.
The funds will be given through cheques according to a set schedule.
