Punjab weather: severe fog leads to temporary closure of motorways

Web desk: Several sections of major motorways and national highways across Punjab were temporarily closed due to dense fog.

The visibility dropped to dangerously low levels, the Motorway Police said.

M-2, M-3, M-4, M-11 closed

Motorway Police Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed stated that the closures were implemented to ensure the safety of motorists and prevent accidents amid poor weather conditions.

According to the spokesperson, the M-2 motorway from Lahore to Kot Momin was closed due to severe fog, while the M-3 motorway from Lahore to Samundri was also shut to traffic for the same reason.

In addition, the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway (M-11) was temporarily closed as dense fog continued to blanket the area.

The spokesperson further said that the M-4 motorway from Pindi Bhattian to Faisalabad was also affected by heavy fog. It led the authorities to suspend traffic movement on that section as well.

Conditions on the national highway were described as alarming, with dense fog reported in Sundar, Manga Mandi, Phool Nagar, and Pattoki, where visibility in some areas dropped to zero, while in others it was limited to just 100 metres, posing serious risks to drivers.

Warning motorists, Syed Imran Ahmed said that lane violations and speeding in foggy conditions could result in fatal accidents.

He advised road users to strictly follow lane discipline, avoid unnecessary travel, and, where possible, schedule journeys during daylight hours.

He added that travel between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm is relatively safer during foggy conditions.

Drivers were also urged to use fog lights, maintain low speeds, and keep a safe distance from vehicles ahead.

The Motorway Police appealed to citizens to check road conditions before travelling and to contact the Motorway Police helpline 130 for guidance or assistance.
