Online child safety groups and individuals, including Jonathan Haidt, a bestselling author on the mental health effects of social media, are urging the Trump administration to look into the popular gaming platform, Roblox.
Haidt’s Anxious Generation Movement, Fairplay, and the conservative group National Center on Sexual Exploitation are among those stating that Roblox’s design and business model do not align with the developmental needs of children.
They have submitted a report to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) criticising the platform’s engagement-maximising design features, claiming its voice and text chat functions frequently expose children to all kinds of content and harmful adults, leading to exploitation and abuse, and stating that its in-game currency, Robux, takes advantage of children’s lack of impulse control.
Roblox is a global online platform and game creation system that immerses users.
Millions come together to explore, create, and share 3D experiences made by users. Instead of being just one game, it serves as a digital ecosystem and marketplace with millions of custom titles.
Which age group is the most active on Roblox?
Roblox has millions of young users starting from age five, who, using block-like avatars, can choose from 7 million games made by other users.
Depending on their age, they can also chat with other users. For example, nine-year-olds can communicate with 15-year-olds, and 13-year-olds can chat with 17-year-olds.
The most popular game is Brookhaven, where players can own and live in big houses, drive luxury vehicles, and explore the city, but the platform has also featured controversial games that allow explicit content, violence, and horror.
