India captain Shubman Gill produced a stunning batting display against the West Indies in Guwahati on Wednesday, smashing a double century in just 117 balls. Gill reached the milestone for the second time in his ODI career, becoming only the second batter after Rohit Sharma to score multiple double centuries in the 50-over format.
His remarkable innings also set a new record for the fastest double century in ODI cricket. Gill brought up his 200 in just 117 balls, an innings featuring 24 fours and seven sixes. Earlier, he had reached his 11th ODI century from 62 deliveries, including 10 fours and five sixes.
The century came during India’s chase of a daunting 406-run target and formed part of a huge opening partnership with Rohit Sharma, which had reached 192 when Gill completed his hundred.
The century was Gill’s third consecutive hundred in ODIs played in India. Only Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers have scored more consecutive ODI centuries in India, with both having registered four in a row.
Gill’s 62-ball century also became the fastest ODI hundred by an Indian captain, surpassing the previous record held by Rohit Sharma, who scored a century off 63 balls in October 2023. Gill had also played a key role in India’s victory in the first ODI, scoring 110 off 108 balls. In that match, he shared a major partnership with Virat Kohli, who went on to score an unbeaten 139 off 88 balls.
In the second ODI, West Indies posted a huge 405 for seven after centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. The Caribbean side took full advantage of the batting-friendly conditions at Barsapara Cricket Stadium to register their highest-ever ODI total.
Earlier, in the second match of the ongoing three-match ODI series between India and the West Indies, West Indies won the toss and elected to bat first. Playing an aggressive brand of cricket, the West Indies posted a mammoth 405 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.
The innings marked only the sixth instance in ODI history in which three batters from the same team scored centuries in a single innings. For the West Indies, opener John Campbell scored a rapid 101 off 68 balls, including nine fours and five sixes. Captain Shai Hope contributed a composed 104 off 94 balls, while Amir Jangoo smashed a blistering 114 off 77 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes.
Roston Chase remained unbeaten on 29, while Shamar Joseph was not out on 14 as the West Indies added 36 runs in the final five overs to finish with a run rate of 8.10. For India, Gurnoor Brar, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two wickets each.
