Sindh Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has said women must have a permanent driving licence and pass a driving test to receive an electric scooter under the provincial government’s scheme.
Speaking to the media, Memon said women with only learner licences would not qualify for the scheme.
He said more than 50,000 women had now applied for driving licences. He added that only 154 women across Sindh had licences when the electric scooter scheme was launched.
Memon said the Sindh government would provide electric scooters if 50,000 women qualified for them.
However, he stressed that the scooters would only be given to women who had a permanent licence and had passed the driving test.
What action will be taken against misuse?
Memon warned that action would be taken if the scooters were used against the scheme’s rules.
He said complaints had been received that some women had changed the colour of their scooters so that men could use them.
He said surprise checks would be carried out. The scooters would be taken back if men were found riding them.
Other government schemes
Memon also mentioned the Benazir Income Support Programme and other schemes aimed at helping low-income families.
He highlighted other initiatives of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)-led Sindh government. These include the Hari Card for farmers and the Labour Card for workers.
He also mentioned development work in Mirpurkhas and Thar. He pointed to hospitals and universities as examples of projects carried out by the provincial government.
Memon said people who receive electric scooters or other government support would not be required to vote for the PPP.
