Smart has unveiled its new Smart #2 electric city car at the Paris Motor Show. Meanwhile, the company has launched the exclusive Couture Edition in China. The new model succeeds the classic Smart ForTwo two-seater city car. It marks the brand’s return to its signature compact vehicle segment with an all-electric design. Smart China announced the Couture Edition on October 12, 2026. The special edition costs 112,999 yuan, approximately $16,790. Production is limited to 999 units for China and another 999 for Europe. The company plans to begin early orders in Europe and China. However, market-specific pricing and availability details will be announced separately.
Smart #2 Features a Distinctive Design
The Smart #2 features styling developed by Mercedes-Benz’s global design team. It uses the Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a platform designed specifically for ultra-compact electric vehicles. The Couture Edition features a matte white body and a gold roof. Gold accents, exclusive 16-inch wheels, and a numbered badge distinguish this special version. Inside, the car features bench-style seating and an S-shaped cockpit. It also retains a split tailgate, with its lower section folding down into a seat. The fold-down section supports up to 120 kilograms. This feature adds practical functionality to the compact electric vehicle.
Battery, Range, and Performance
The Chinese version of Smart #2 uses a 35.8-kWh lithium iron phosphate battery. CATL supplies the battery cells. According to the company, the Chinese model offers a CLTC driving range of 410 kilometres. Its rear-mounted electric motor powers the rear wheels. The motor produces a maximum output of 60 kW, equivalent to around 80 horsepower. It also delivers peak torque of 130 Nm.
The European version uses the same 35.8-kWh battery capacity. However, its targeted combined WLTP range is 290 kilometres. These range figures use different testing standards. Therefore, they should not be compared directly. The European model also supports 65-kW DC fast charging. Smart says the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.
Safety and Technology
The Smart #2 includes the next-generation Tridion Cell Evo safety structure. It also features driver-assistance systems designed to support safer driving. These features continue Smart’s focus on occupant protection within a compact vehicle. The model combines its small footprint with an electric powertrain and modern safety technology.
China and Europe Receive Limited Editions
Smart will offer the Couture Edition in both China and Europe. Each market will receive a separate allocation of 999 units. Chinese buyers will also have access to the Premium version. Smart plans to announce its Chinese pricing in November 2026. The company has not yet announced all market-specific equipment and availability details. Buyers will need to wait for further announcements regarding local orders and deliveries.
The Smart #2 appeared in a vehicle filing catalogue published by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in August 2026. Geely’s Zhejiang Haoqing Automobile Manufacturing facility produces the vehicle.
Smart Returns to Its Two-Seater Roots
The original Smart ForTwo launched in 1998 and sold more than two million units. The new Smart #2 returns to the compact two-seater segment with an electric platform. Smart operates as a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely. The new model represents an important step in continuing the brand’s small-car identity. With its limited-edition launch in China and global debut in Paris, Smart is preparing to reintroduce its two-seater concept to electric vehicle buyers.
The model’s final market availability, pricing, and equipment details will help determine its position in the growing electric city car market.
