France dominated the game on Tuesday, with Kylian Mbappe netting twice in a 3-0 victory over Sweden in the World Cup qualifying for the last 16 where they will meet Paraguay.
The French team dominated the match from start to finish at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, building up a host of opportunities but keeping Sweden’s attack under control.
Mbappe opened the scoring just before half-time.
The win was made easier early in the second half when Olise, who was key to the success throughout, helped Bradley Barcola in the 53rd minute to double the French lead.
Olise then once again set up Mbappe, who scored his second goal of the evening into the back of the net with just about 15 minutes left.
Mbappe’s goals resulted in a total of 6 goals in the World Cup, level with Lionel Messi who is in competition for the Golden Boot.
He also extended his total World Cup goals to 18 goals in his career, one shy of Messi’s record of 19.
After the score was opened by Mbappe, he embraced head coach Didier Deschamps, who had missed France’s last group-stage game after his mother died.
Deschamps, who led France to victory at the 1998 World Cup as captain and coach of the 2018 World Cup team, will be stepping down at the end of the tournament.
Sweden had a lot of attacking players like Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Anthony Elanga but they were unable to break the French defence.
France will now take on Paraguay on Saturday in Philadelphia in the round of 16, where the two-time world champions hope to keep their impressive run going in the tournament.
