Tehran thanks international delegations for honouring late leader

Attack on Lebanon will consider violation of US-Iran deal Araghchi

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday thanked the representatives of over 70 nations that took part in the funeral of Iran’s martyred Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling their arrival a historic and unforgettable moment for the Iranian people.

The delegation from foreign countries indicated the importance of the event according to Araghchi, and Araghchi expressed his gratitude to all countries which sent representatives.

He accorded a special mention to the Arab countries, highlighting the depth of brotherhood and close bond they enjoyed with Iran.

The foreign minister said that the event will be a “defining moment” in the nation’s history, which will be cherished for years.

The funeral also saw the burial of Iran’s current Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei’s wife Zahra Haddad Adel in Tehran.

According to international media reports, Mojtaba Khamenei had to miss his wife’s burial prayers due to his failure to obtain the necessary security clearance from Iranian security agencies.

His absence coincided with growing security fears in the days after Israel had announced it would go ahead with attacks on Iran’s leadership even after the announcement of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral.

Reports said that Mojtaba Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, was among Israel’s main targets and that he did not made any public appearances since he took the helm of the country’s leadership.

Zahra Haddad Adel was killed the same day as Ayatollah Ali Khamenei among several of his close associates were killed in an Israeli strike on February 28.

Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, an influential Iranian conservative politician and former speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Majlis), was her father.

Haddad-Adel has long had a strong foothold in Iran’s conservative establishment, and was considered one of the leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s closest political allies.
