Lightening in Tharparkar kills three people, while other three were injured after lightening struck a group of labourers sheltering under a tree during heavy monsoon rain and thunderstorms in the district.
The incident occurred in the Islamkot area, one of several parts of the district hit by monsoon downpours. According to reports, ten labourers had taken shelter beneath a tree when lightning struck the group.
The strike killed a father and son, along with a third person, while three others sustained injuries. The deceased were identified as Sajan Meghwar and Taj Muhammad Shah.
The bodies of the victims and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and other procedures.
The district administration issued an advisory urging residents to avoid taking shelter under trees or in open spaces during rainfall and thunderstorms in order to avoid happenings of such incidents in the future. The administration warned that such locations pose a heightened risk during lightning activity.
The Tharparkar district has a history of deadly lightning incidents.
In 2019, 26 people, including women and children, lost their lives across Tharparkar and Sanghar districts after being struck by lightning during thundershowers. 22 deaths occurred in Tharparkar, while four others were reported in the neighbouring Sanghar district. Deaths of dozens of cattle also took place amid the severe weather in that year.
Earlier, Sindh Livestock and Fisheries Department issued an emergency warning, asking fishermen to avoid going into the deep sea on August 1 and 2 due to expected bad weather and rough sea conditions.
A department spokesperson said the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) had warned of stormy weather at sea. The Fisheries Department instructed its officials to take all possible measures to protect fishermen and their boats.
