Uganda announces public holiday on October 9

Uganda is marking its 64th Independence Day on October 9, a national public holiday commemorating the country’s independence from British rule in 1962.

October 9 is officially listed as a public holiday in Uganda, with the date marking the country’s independence in 1962. 

As per government officials, all kinds of public and private sector offices are to remain closed. 

The educational institutions and other related departments will also observe a holiday on October 9.

Uganda became independent after nearly seven decades of British colonial rule, with Sir Edward Mutesa II serving as the first president and Milton Obote becoming the first prime minister.

The day is observed across the country with official ceremonies and celebrations, while government offices and many businesses close for the holiday.

Other countries with a holiday on October 9

The same date is also a public holiday in South Korea, where October 9 is observed as Hangeul Day, celebrating the Korean alphabet.

The holiday honours King Sejong the Great, who oversaw the creation of Hangeul in the 15th century. 

The writing system was formally introduced in 1446 through Hunminjeongeum, with the aim of making reading and writing more accessible to ordinary Koreans. 

South Korea’s 2026 national holiday calendar confirms October 9 as Hangeul Day. 

In Ecuador, October 9 is also a national holiday, marking the Independence of Guayaquil from Spanish rule in 1820.

The uprising in Guayaquil on October 9, 1820, established an independent province and became an important step in the wider struggle for independence in Ecuador. 

In 2026, the occasion marks the 206th anniversary and falls on Friday, October 9. 

As a result, October 9, 2026, is a significant public holiday in all three countries, although each marks a different chapter of national history.
