The President of the United States (US), Donald Trump, has ordered a one day pause in airstrikes against Iran, temporarily halting the daily military operations that had continued for nearly two weeks, according to US media reports today.
No US strikes were carried out on Friday. However, it remains unclear whether the pause is limited to one day or signals the beginning of a possible ceasefire or diplomatic breakthrough.
According to a US media report, the US military is continuing preparations for further large-scale operations against Iran. However, President Trump has not yet approved those plans.
The report claimed that Trump had been approving daily strike plans around midday, with airstrikes taking place a few hours later.
On Friday, however, he reportedly rejected the proposed operation and instructed the military not to carry out any attacks.
Speaking to reporters later, Trump said he has the authority to continue and even increase military action against Iran. However, he said reaching an agreement with Tehran would be a “wiser strategy.”
He also said Iran is now showing greater seriousness in negotiations. According to Trump, military preparations are continuing while diplomatic contacts are also underway.
Omani delegation
The reported pause in airstrikes came as an Omani delegation arrived in Iran for talks. The discussions are said to focus on a possible agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Reports suggest that Iran and Oman could reach an agreement later this week. President Trump is expected to decide whether to approve or reject any proposed deal.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it destroyed 17 US drones during attacks on American military bases.
The IRGC also claimed it targeted one F-15 fighter jet, one P-8 aircraft, one C-17 transport aircraft and eight aerial refuelling aircraft.
