The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has made the decision to build two new water storage tanks utilising its own funds amounting to Rs1 billion to improve water supply in Lahore.
These tanks are set to be located in Laxmi Chowk and the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) areas.
As per official sources, WASA has released tenders for the water tank project and has increased communication with the relevant institutions to secure the necessary No Objection Certificates (NOCs).
An underground water storage tank is planned to be constructed on the grounds of Dyal Singh College in the Lakshmi Chowk area.
It is important to note that WASA has also opted to utilise the grounds of UET for the construction of water storage tanks.
Officials from WASA have indicated that previously, more than 10 water storage tanks have been built with funding from the Punjab government.
The anticipated completion of these new tanks is expected to address the long-standing water issues in Laxmi Chowk, while also providing significant relief to the populations in front of UET and the surrounding areas.
WASA and EPA decide to conduct water quality tests
In January, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), in partnership with the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), resolved to carry out extensive water quality assessments of Rawal Lake to evaluate pollution levels and pinpoint sources of contamination.
This decision was made under the guidance of the Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, who directed the relevant agencies to examine the quality of water flowing into and out of the lake.
The objective of the testing was to precisely identify the sources, locations, and extent of pollution impacting one of the capital’s most vital water reservoirs.
