Xiaomi has decided that it will give its customers a brand-new SUV if a Dragon Scale Battery catches fire due to a manufacturing defect.
Electric vehicle battery fires are among the most concerning issues for consumers, but Xiaomi has now made an announcement to address this concern that has attracted everyone’s attention. The company has introduced its new Dragon Scale EV battery with an extraordinary lifetime guarantee.
If a Dragon Scale battery catches fire due to a manufacturing defect, Xiaomi will provide the affected owner with a brand-new SUV of the same Skynomad series and the same trim. The special thing is that the vehicle’s age, mileage, or depreciation in value will not be taken into account.
What happens if the battery burns in an accident?
Xiaomi’s guarantee is not limited to manufacturing defects. If the vehicle catches fire as a result of a collision, the company will also pay the difference between the amount received from insurance and the vehicle’s market value before the accident.
However, this facility is not available for every vehicle. The guarantee will only apply to vehicles for personal use owned by the first owner. Ride-sharing, rental vehicles, and used vehicles will not be included.
An important condition in Xiaomi’s guarantee
To qualify for this guarantee, the vehicle owner will have to maintain an active subscription to Xiaomi’s connected services. In addition, the vehicle must be serviced only at authorised service centres.
The reason for this condition is also quite important. The company has included a cloud-connected battery management system in the Dragon Scale battery, which continuously monitors data related to the battery cells.
What is special about the new battery?
Xiaomi says that the Dragon Scale battery goes beyond existing safety standards. It features a high-voltage isolation system that operates within milliseconds.
China’s new battery safety rules
This development comes at a time when China has implemented new GB 38031-2025 standards for electric vehicle battery safety, commonly referred to as the “no fire, no explosion” rule.
Under the old standards, it was sufficient to provide a warning before a dangerous situation developed in the battery. However, under the new rules, after thermal runaway begins, the battery pack must remain without catching fire and without allowing smoke to enter the passenger cabin for at least two hours.
The new standards also include requirements for tests involving impacts from underneath the vehicle and protecting the battery from potential damage during fast charging.
Xiaomi is not the only company
Xiaomi is not the first Chinese automaker to offer this type of guarantee in the event of a battery fire. Chery had earlier introduced its Rhino Battery Safety program, which includes a lifetime warranty for the battery, motor, and control unit, along with an offer to provide a replacement vehicle if thermal runaway destroys the vehicle.
Similarly, Buick has also made a similar promise for a limited period, although the offers from Xiaomi and Chery appear to be relatively more comprehensive.
When will it arrive in the Skynomad N90 and N70?
According to Xiaomi, the Dragon Scale battery will launch on September 7 with the Skynomad N90 and N70. These vehicles will use a large 76 kWh battery, which the company is offering with a lifetime spontaneous combustion warranty.
For now, it is unclear whether the same battery will also be used in Xiaomi’s SU7 or YU7. However, the company is preparing to enter the European market, where this lifetime battery guarantee could attract significant attention from consumers.
As the popularity of electric vehicles continues to grow, battery safety is also becoming an increasingly important issue for consumers. In this situation, Xiaomi’s move is not limited to introducing a new battery but also sends a clear message of the company’s confidence in its EV technology.
If this technology proves to offer the same level of safety in real-world use as the company claims, other EV manufacturers may also introduce similar long-term guarantees in the future.
