WEBDESK: Disney’s Zootopia 2 has flown past the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Rewriting the history books of the studio’s animation record. The sequel has now made an estimated $1.46 Billion worldwide. Making it the top grossing animated film ever released by Disney.
The film has dethroned Frozen II as the top-grossing movie. The milestone validates the massive appeal of the Zootopia franchise to audiences across the world.
Most of the revenue generated by the film has been generated outside the North American market. While it has made some $333 million in the domestic market, ticket sales abroad amount to about $1.13 billion. The people of the international community have been the driving force behind the historic run of the sequel.
China has become the outstanding market. The film has made more than $500 million there alone and is now the highest-selling non-Chinese animated film there within days of its release. The achievement is one of the best performances of Hollywood in China in years.
Zootopia 2 also became a $1 billion box office movie in just 17 days. This makes it the quickest PG motion picture to attain the feat, underlining the magnitude of its worldwide influence. Analysts note that had it not been for its massive international turnout, the sequel would not have reached past Frozen II.
Despite its success, the film ranks fourth on the list of all-time Animated Box Office films worldwide at present. China’s Ne Zha 2 still holds the position of first place, followed by Inside Out 2 and The Lion King. The movie is at the end of its theatrical run, industry watchers believe that there won’t be further jumps in the rankings.
The success of Zootopia 2, along with Inside Out 2, signals Disney’s on-going dependence on established franchises. The studio is already pressing on ahead with a number of major sequels, such as Toy Story 5 and Frozen 3, as it looks to replicate this box office momentum in the years to come.
