For decades, it has been a common sight along canals in Pakistan’s villages and towns. When people do not have access to a swimming tube or life jacket, they tie the ends of their trousers, trap air inside and inflate them. The air-filled trousers act as a simple flotation aid, helping them stay afloat in the water. Now, this indigenous “airbag” has found fans beyond Pakistan.
In the viral video, several foreign men can be seen standing near beaches and swimming spots while holding traditional shalwars. In one scene, a man carefully checks the inflated shalwar to make sure no air is escaping. Another proudly stretches out the inflated garment as if presenting a remarkable new invention.
