Why is Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara trending on internet?

Sri Lankan fast bowler Lahiru Kumara is trending on the internet as Sri Lanka takes on India in the first Test, with his fitness, pace and history of injuries once again under the spotlight.

Kumara, who has been part of Sri Lanka’s Test setup for nearly a decade, has repeatedly faced fitness setbacks during his international career. He bowled just one over in Sri Lanka’s first Test against the West Indies in June before leaving the field with a hamstring injury that brought his tour to an early end.

The pacer’s injury history has also been evident in previous encounters against India. During Sri Lanka’s 2022 tour of India, Kumara suffered an injury during his spell on the opening day of the Mohali Test and was forced to leave the field. Sri Lanka went on to lose both matches by an innings.

Sri Lanka’s limited pool of fast-bowling options has made Kumara particularly important to the national side. Sri Lankan captain Dhananjaya de Silva previously highlighted the difficulty of replacing him, describing Kumara as the fastest bowler available to Sri Lanka in red-ball cricket.

“Right now in Sri Lanka, there’s no bowler who can replace Lahiru Kumara in the squad,” de Silva said. He added that the bowler’s absence had affected Sri Lanka’s chances in the West Indies and expressed hope that Kumara would return strongly.

Born on February 13, 1997, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, Kumara is a right-arm fast bowler known for his raw pace and aggressive approach. He emerged through Sri Lanka’s junior cricket system before making his first-class debut for Sri Lanka A against West Indies A in October 2016.

Kumara made his Test debut against Zimbabwe on October 29, 2016, followed by his ODI debut against South Africa in February 2017. He made his T20I debut against Pakistan later that year.

Known for regularly bowling at speeds above 140 kilometres per hour, Kumara has developed a reputation for generating bounce and movement and troubling opposition batsmen. However, injuries have repeatedly interrupted his progress and limited his consistency at international level.

He has also represented domestic sides including Kandy, Galle and Dambulla and featured in the Lanka Premier League, gaining experience across different formats and playing conditions.

With Sri Lanka facing India in the ongoing first Test, attention has once again turned to Kumara and his role in the team’s pace attack. His ability to stay fit and deliver consistently could prove crucial as Sri Lanka look to strengthen their bowling options in red-ball cricket.
