Bangladesh secured a landmark nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test, chasing down a target of 57 runs to complete one of the biggest upsets in Test cricket.
Mominul Haque struck the winning boundary off Beau Webster as Bangladesh sealed their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil within four days at Marrara Oval in Darwin.
The historic win sparked wild celebrations among Bangladesh players, who dominated the world’s top-ranked Test side with the bat, ball and in the field throughout the match.
Bangladesh’s victory marked a significant milestone in their Test history, coming 23 years after Australia last hosted them in the format. Australia had previously won the teams’ only Test series 2-0 in 2003.
Spin-bowling all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz played a key role on the final day, taking four wickets as Australia were dismissed for 284 after resuming on 161-4.
Miraz had earlier scored 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings and dismissed Steve Smith for 44. On the fourth day, he removed Alex Carey, Beau Webster and captain Pat Cummins before trapping Nathan Lyon lbw for 15 to end Australia’s innings.
Cameron Green provided Australia with a late fightback, scoring 104 for his third Test century and first on home soil. However, he was dismissed shortly after reaching the milestone, effectively ending Australia’s hopes of setting a challenging target.
Hasan Mahmud also impressed with the ball, finishing with nine wickets in the match.
Bangladesh then completed the chase with ease despite losing Tanzid Hasan for a duck. Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam guided the visitors to victory as Bangladesh celebrated a historic triumph over Australia.
