The district administration has established a seven-member inquiry committee to investigate the fire at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad, which has killed at least 15 newborn babies.
A formal notification was issued by the administration to form the committee, whose leadership will be in the hands of the additional deputy commissioner general.
The panel will look at what happened, what went wrong and what caused the fire, and will conclude whether there were any flaws that led to the deaths.
In addition to the Capital Emergency Services director general, Superintendent of Police City and Assistant Commissioner I-9, the committee will also have a Capital Development Authority (CDA) director general.
The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) and PIMS officials have also been added to the panel.
At the time of the fire, there were 16 babies in the nursery, of which just one baby was rescued, said PIMS officials.
Rescue sources indicate that when an air-conditioner compressor exploded inside the nursery, the fire broke out around 6:45 am.
The fire broke out in the third-floor ward of Mother and Child Hospital (MCH). Officials reported 14 babies were burned to death and at least 15 were born dead in the fire.
There were six fire brigade vehicles and 4 ambulances involved in the rescue.
The district administration, in a statement, said the investigation committee would find out what caused the fire and what circumstances contributed to the deaths.
The panel is tasked with presenting its report in 24 hours, and its findings are expected to provide clarity on the cause of the fire and whether there was negligence and any lapses in the safety of the hospital.
