The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is developing an e-parking system at seven locations in Islamabad.
The officials said that the system will digitally track how long vehicles remain parked and monitor parking charges.
CDA officials briefed the Senate Standing Committee on Interior about the project, saying work was currently under way.
Under the proposed system, the duration of each vehicle’s stay in a designated parking area will be recorded on an electronic dashboard. The system is intended to help the authority monitor parking times and charges digitally.
Senator Naseema Ehsan told the committee that a traffic management system similar to one introduced in Karachi had also been launched in Islamabad.
She highlighted the difficulties residents and visitors face in finding parking spaces, noting that people from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and other parts of Pakistan live in or frequently visit the capital.
CDA Director General Enforcement Anum Fatima said the Blue Area parking plaza had been completed and would help ease parking problems in one of the city’s busiest commercial districts.
She said parking fees were being collected in accordance with the CDA’s approved layout plan.
According to the official, cashless payments and QR codes are being used for transactions at parking facilities across Islamabad.
Senator Abid Sher Ali questioned the CDA’s existing parking arrangements, pointing out that parking fees were still being collected on roads despite the authority’s statement that the Blue Area parking plaza had been completed.
He described the two positions as contradictory and asked the CDA chairman to clarify parking arrangements at newly constructed commercial plazas.
Sher Ali also proposed that new plazas should not be issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) unless they provide sufficient underground parking facilities.
The proposed electronic parking system is part of wider efforts by the CDA to improve traffic and parking management in Islamabad, where limited parking capacity remains a persistent concern for residents and visitors.
